~ Better Exercise Performance ~ The muscle damage
that you experience during exercise does not only leave you feeling
sore the next day, but it also hampers your performance in the next
day's workout. By reducing the amount of muscle damage you experience
during workouts and accelerating muscle repair following workouts,
whey protein supplementation enables you to perform at a higher
level in your next workout.
For example, a study published in the prestigious journal Medicine
& Science in Sports & Exercise compared the effects of a sports
drink versus a sports drink plus whey protein on performance in
a second workout when these supplements were consumed following
an initial workout. Researchers found that subjects exhibited 66
percent greater endurance in the second workout when they consumed
whey protein with the sports drink.
Another study, from Canada's McGill University, looked at the effects
of whey protein supplementation on high-intensity exercise performance.
Twenty healthy young adults (10 men, 10 women) were studied before
supplementation and three months after supplementation with either
a whey protein supplement or a casein placebo. Muscular performance
was assessed by whole leg isokinetic cycle testing, measuring peak
power and 30-second work capacity. Both peak power and 30-second
work capacity increased significantly in the whey protein group,
with no change in the placebo group.

~ Faster Post-Exercise Muscle Recovery ~ Every
hard workout causes microscopic damage to muscle fibers. One of
the symptoms of this damage is a type of muscle pain known as DOMS
(delayed-onset muscle soreness). The faster your body can repair
this damage, and reduce the associated soreness, the better you
will be able to perform in your next workout.
Research has shown that consuming whey protein and branched chain
amino acids (whey protein is higher in BCAA than any other protein)
before, during, and immediately after workouts radically accelerates
post-workout muscle repair. Taking in these nutrients at such times
makes them more readily available when they are needed the most.
For example, in a Japanese study, researchers administered BCAA
to subjects before they performed a set of squat exercises. Over
the next few days the subjects reported significantly less muscle
soreness and fatigue than when they did the same squat set without
using BCAA beforehand.
Replenishing muscle fuel stores after exercise is another important
aspect of post-workout muscle recovery. During long or intense workouts
the muscles are depleted of glycogen, their primary fuel source.
In addition to accelerating muscle tissue repair, whey protein supplementation
has also been shown to enhance post-exercise muscle glycogen storage.
A study from the University of Texas found that a carbohydrate-protein
supplement increased post-exercise muscle glycogen replenishment
by 128% compared to a conventional sports drink, which resulted
in a 55% improve in endurance performance in a subsequent workout.
Increasing the amount of glycogen stored in your muscles enables
you to exercise harder, longer, and it appears whey protein supplementation
does just that.

~ Fewer Injuries ~ In athletes who train hard every
day, exercise-related tissue damage can accumulate to the point
where it becomes a full-fledged overuse injury. By accelerating
the repair of exercise-related tissue damage, whey protein (especially
when consumed immediately before, during, and/or after exercise)
is able to prevent some cases of overuse injuries such as tendonitis
and runner's knee.
This particular benefit of whey protein was demonstrated in a study
from Vanderbilt University that involved Marine recruits as subjects.
During boot camp, these subjects were randomly assigned to receive
either a recovery supplement containing whey protein or a placebo
after physical training each day. By the end of boot camp, those
Marines who had received the recovery supplement with whey protein
had experienced 37 percent fewer joint and muscle injuries than
the Marines in the placebo group.
