Deep Water Running Shoes - AQx Sports Deep Water
Butt Kicker style running water exercise
Deep Water Running Exercise Butt Kicker Style:
The "butt kicker" style of deep water running exercise training
can be used in conjunction with the AQx Sports deep water running
shoe if the goal is to not only elevate your heart rate, etc., but
to also specifically work the hamstrings. This is an excellent exercise
for speed development and/or toning of this particular muscle group
of the thighs.
Deep Water Running Exercise Butt Kicker Style Key points:
- The water should be at shoulder level below the chin with the head held in a neutral position facing forward.
- The body leans slightly forward of a vertical position. This is important because if you lean too far backwards your knees will come up too high in the front and you will be practicing the high-knee version of DWR and not providing more emphasis on the hamstrings.
- The arm carriage should be relaxed and identical to land-based running. Your arms will primarily move from the shoulder joint (relatively stable) with elbows flexed at approximately 90º.
- The hands are held in a slightly clenched-fist position with your thumb resting lightly on your forefinger to decrease the likelihood of using a dog-paddling- type motion.
- The knees will be somewhat locked with the lower leg completing the majority of the movement. Simply attempt to repeatedly kick yourself in the butt with your alternating heels. This is best done as an anaerobic (shorter, more intense) portion of your workout. For example, 15-30 seconds hard followed by 30-45 seconds (or more) of easy cross country style running to allow for good recovery. Please remember that water is an accommodating resistance, so the faster you try to move those heals to the butt, the harder it is!
