Candida Concerns - by S. L. Hominuk
Candida (yeast) Overgrowth: If you (or even your
child) have been treated with antiobiotics or corti-steroids prescribed
by your physician, you should be concerned about candida (yeast)
overgrowth. This syndrome is a self-perpetuating cycle which the
yeast overgrowth starts and inhibits the immune syndrome which allows
for another allergy, sinus infection, sore throat, ear infection,
rash, which in turn, gets treated by stronger and stronger antibiotics.
(If you have children, it would behoove you to look into a dietary
supplements such as Threelac and probiotics especially formulated
for children).
When yeast is in an overabundance (see
symptoms), there may be local yeast infections in the mouth
(thrush), gastrointestinal tract (gas) vagina (yeast infection),
urinary tract (bladder/kidney infection), prostate gland (prostrate
troubles), skin (hives, rashes), fingernail, or toenail (fungus
of the nail bed). If you have more then one sexual partner and have
unprotected sex, you should be concerned about passing candida from
one person to the other as well. Candida should be a concern to
women, men and children. Too much yeast can cripple the immune system,
causing chronic viral and bacterial infection or allergies. Yeast
can damage the intestinal wall allowing food particles and toxins
to enter the blood stream. The body then produces antibodies to
fight these foreign substances and typical "allergic" reactions
like eczema and hay fever, along with headache, dizziness, heart
palpitations, anxiety, fatigue, and muscle aches. One way of strengthening
the immune system so that one does not have to undergo an antibiotic
regiment, is to preventatively supplement with probiotics.
Saliva Test: A simple test to determine if candida
may be a problem is to do spit your saliva into a glass of water,
upon waking in the morning. Do this prior to putting anything into
your mouth. You may have to work up some saliva to spit into the
glass, and may do so a few times to ensure that you have enough
in the glass to cover the surface of the water. Observe the reaction
of the saliva in the glass every few minutes for a half hour.
If
there are "strings" coming down from your saliva, if the water turned
cloudy, or if it sank to the bottom - chances are that you probably
have candida! If you do NOT have a candida concern, your saliva
should stay at the top of the glass and will eventually dissipate
after 30 minutes. Although this simple test is a relatively quick,
economical way to determine if you have a yeast problem, sometimes
people will test negative so it is best to pay attention to the
symptoms presented and see your physician who can then perform further
studies.
